The Year of the River - The Music of Mark DiSciullo and Friends

My name is Mark DiSciullo. I'm an "Americana" style Guitar player. I define Americana as a rootsy fusion of rock & roll, country, blues, and folk...with a little Reggae, Celtic, and Soul flavorings thrown in as needed.

I've been a musician since I was 15 years old. My first love has always been the guitar. Along the way, I ventured down many paths learning different instruments such as, piano, mandolin, drums, lap steel, tin whistle, harmonica, but always found myself circling back to the guitar.

One day I uncovered an old 4-track cassette player at a garage sale that allowed me to layer multiple instruments on top of each other to create recordings that sounded like a full band was accompaning me. This motivated me to write and experiement. That old 4-track player was held together by rubber bands and the process was slow and tedious...but in the end, I always found it a very rewarding and expressive experience ... a labour of love!

Along came digital recording. I was able to get a hold of software such as Cakewalk Sonar, Sound Forge and ProTools. This majorly streamlined the process for me. Once you go never go back! Ironically, I now spend hours trying to get that "analog" sound that came so naturally on my ol' beat up 4-track! I eventually ended up building a small studio in my basement based around ProTools 8. I also house my guitar collection in that studio.

My main influences come from what I consider deverse collection of "favorites." My Irish roots have me at home with traditional Celtic music, but my style of playing more closely reflects Electric Blues (BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan), Folk (Woody Guthrie), Southern Rock (Allman Brothers), Alt-Country (Band of Heathens, Jayhawks), Acoustic Country Blues (Rev. Gary Davis), Roots Reggae (Bob Marley, Burning Spear), Jazz (Count Basie) and Singer/Songwriter (Ryan Adams, Van Morrison) genres...all of which, to me, defines Americana!
